Topic of the thesis: "The May 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake, stress transfer and associated volcanism"

On 26 May 2006, the region south of Mt. Merapi Volcano was struck by an magnitude 6.4 earthquake that partly devastated the city of Yogyakarta and its suburbs. The event caused severe damage to the densely inhabited area, leaving about 6,000 people dead, 50,000 injured, and between 500,000 – 1 million homeless.
Shortly after the earthquake, the Merapi volcano significantly increased its activity; the volume of lava dome extrusion and the number of pyroclastic flows tripled [Walter et al., 2007]. In addition, the volcano also may have indirectly augmented the scale of the earthquake disaster, because damage was caused to those areas underlain by remobilized volcaniclastic deposits as this brief report discusses.

The PhD position is attached to UNU-EHS in cooperation with GFZ-Potsdam

Co-supervision with Dr. M. Sobiesiak and Prof. Dr. J. Zschau
This thesis is funded through the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System
